It was nearly dark now, and I was too tired for a bike ride. I found a cheap lock at a convenience store and hurried back to secure the back doors. I was only two short blocks from Highway One, which was just a busy city street at this point, lined with gas stations, take-out restaurants and tire shops.

I didn’t know what I was transporting and didn’t want to take any chances if I was going to venture out, so I went walking around looking for a place to buy one. I was delivering in the morning and needed a lock for the trailer. I was fantasizing about a similar experience now, as I found myself in another industrial area near the Port of Long Beach, but it was already getting dark, and I knew I had to move quickly. In early summer I had been lucky enough to make a delivery to a warehouse in Huntington Beach, just a couple miles south, where I took a long bicycle ride, gobbled up fish tacos and beer and took in a beautiful sunset from the perch of an elevated lifeguard platform. I had been traversing the humid North East and the dusty Southwest for several weeks, and I was looking forward to seeing the ocean again.

When I first saw the delivery destination on the computer I was excited : Long Beach, CA. Highway 1 also runs straight through the heart of Los Angeles, a city as dirty, busy and congested as any city in the United States. From Orange to Mendocino counties, the PAC skirts such iconic seascapes as Morro and Monterey Bays, Big Sur, San Simeon, San Francisco Bay, Half-Moon Bay and the redwood coasts of Santa Cruz and Pacifica. Highway 1 in California, AKA the Paciic Coast Highway, stretches over 650 miles, meandering its desultory way north through some of the most beautiful, scenic areas in the country.
